Day 3: Part I – Galápagos Islands
Before I share about the learning opportunity our group of 66 people (parents, teachers, & students) experienced, I want to thank everyone who donated to my sons, especially those who donated multiple times. I don’t take lightly those of you who follow my Educator Barnes/Blazing Brilliance content, whom I never met in person, that donated just because you saw the importance and value of this opportunity for two Black boys who love science.
I’m also proud of my twin sons for taking on numerous jobs to contribute to their travels as well.
…………………………
We left Ecuador and flew to the Galápagos Islands. Our plane took us from Quito to Balta Island.
There are a lot of rules when you go to the Galápagos. Essentially, leave nature where you found it and don’t bring anything to the islands that will disrupt the natural habitat.
Our first activity was going to a turtle ranch and hiking through a lava tunnel.
Essentially imagine being in a zoo but directly inside the animal’s habitat. Animals were so close you could literally touch them but DON’T touch them!
Also, my 40 year old knees were NOT prepared to hike through a lava tunnel ![]()

I made it
It was nice to feel part of nature!
