As a child, I attended a missionary Baptist church. My paternal grandmother was the church organist and, at one point, the youth choir director. Of course, she had her grandchildren in the youth choir.
One of the songs we learned was “This Little Light of Mine.” Even to this day, it’s one of my favorite songs. The message is simple: regardless of what life brings you, let your light shine.
When I saw a book with the same title as the song, I knew I needed to read it. The audience for this book is preschool through second grade. What I loved most was the fact that it is a lift the flap book. Sometimes these books are overlooked, but they shouldn’t be.
When a reader has the opportunity to lift a flap in a book, it provides a secondary layer to the story. It’s nice to take in a page and then open the flap for an additional surprise.
If you are looking for a book with lovely illustrations and a good message, get a copy of This Little Light of Mine by Darcy Pattison.
