National Reading Month: Educator Barnes Reads – A Song for Harlem (Scraps of Time Series)

Patricia McKissack is the author behind the Scraps of Time series.  There are four books in the series:  Abby Takes a Stand, Away West, A Song for Harlem, and The Home-Run King.  The books are narrated by Grandma Gee.  Each book begins with Grandma Gee and her grandchildren going through items of family members from past generations.  Each ‘scrap of time’ spurs a story.  The story is told from the viewpoint of the relative when he or she was a youth.  What I love most about this series is the reader is able to learn about different points of history through the eyes of a black child.

Check out the video below to hear an excerpt from book three in the series, A Song for Harlem.
