Brothers of the Knight by Debbie Allen is a twist on the classic tale The Twelve Dancing Princesses. I have read this story aloud many times to students and they love this story. They love the fact the narrator is Happy, the family dog, who feels misunderstood, but has the time to recount the mystery of Reverend Knight’s 12 sons’ torn up shoes that he finds when he wakes them up each morning. The sons are sneaking out and dancing all night long, but they are afraid to share their love of dancing with their father because they believe he won’t approve. This story shows that parents and their children may have more in common than they think.
