Brothers of the Knight by Debbie Allen is a twist on the classic tale The Twelve Dancing Princesses. I have read this story aloud many times to students, and they love this story. They love the fact that the narrator is Happy, the family dog, who feels misunderstood but has time to recount the mystery of the Reverend Knight’s 12 sons’ torn-up shoes he finds when he wakes them each morning. The sons are sneaking out to dance all night, but they are afraid to share their love of dancing with their father because they believe he won’t approve. This story shows that parents and their children may have more in common than they think.
