Book Review: This is the Earth

In a world that is filled with so much chaos and destruction, it is important to remember that each one of us has the power to change this narrative. This is the Earth by Deirdre “Deedee” Cummings is a book that shows children how they can contribute to making the world a better place.

The vivid images drawn by illustrator Charlene Mosley and the sing-song rhyme helps drives the theme of the book. From page to page, it is clear there can be peace on earth if each and every one of us does our part. The story includes illustrations of diverse children, so every child can see him or herself on the pages. The diversity isn’t just skin tone. It includes children with different abilities, religions, and even hair styles.

In the back of the book, the author provided six pages of questions that will promote discussion and reflection. Although this book is geared towards elementary aged students, the prompts in the back of the book could be used in the secondary setting and incorporated into units that cover war or conflict. Furthermore, this book would fit seamlessly into social-emotional curricula.

And I’ll do me.

Every day or so, let’s meet in the middle.

We’ll both laugh a lot.

We’ll both learn a little.

I know this is a children’s book, but some adults could reflect on those words.

This book would be a great addition to a home, classroom, or library!
