Monday Musings: And the Giants will Fall

Last week was not a good week. I did not even write a Monday Musings even though I had time. I was too annoyed, frustrated, and angry. I’m pretty much a go-with-the-flow type of lady. Last week, my flow was repeatedly interrupted with negativity.

The issue – my writing.

Apparently, some individuals are feeling threatened by what I am writing even going so far as to assuming they are the subject of my articles. Let me throw back to an old song, but add a twist, “You’re so vain, I bet you think this piece is about you?” or maybe I should say, “If the shoe fits, wear it.”

I’ve been writing since I was a kid, and I currently possess most of the stories, fiction & nonfiction, I have ever written…including a story I wrote in fifth grade called “Twin Trouble.” If you don’t know, I have twins. Writing is the form in which I express myself the clearest.

Admittedly, I’m an awkward person to interact with in person. I suck at social gatherings and that working the room business. If I have a chance to process and respond in written form, I articulate my thoughts so much better.

Writing is so much of who I am that I can’t stop because some people are afraid. The push back caused me to pause. It caused me to consider toning it down. Thanks to a lot of people who encouraged me last week, I won’t do that.

Education in our country is a mess. The last action we need to take is shutting down people of color voicing the problems in our education system. As one friend said, “If you weren’t hitting the nail on the head, they wouldn’t try to come for you.”

This means a teacher at my sons’s school might not like me or some colleagues might not like me because of what I write. Nevertheless, I think the children in our education system, especially the children that look like my children, are worth some people disliking me.

The picture I included in this Monday Musing is a sketch my son drew this past weekend. There might be some giants, even some you can’t fully see, trying to block you, but they don’t have to stop you.

I almost got stopped by people trying to come for me and my job. Getting people to understand they have to change what they are doing in education is hard. I should have expected this type of resistance even from teacher “friends.”

Now, I’m ready to battle…because we all know the pen is mightier!
