Monday Musings: Just one more day

IMG-1637We didn’t have a blizzard this year, but we had some really cold days that led to school cancellation.  Today, instead of enjoying my first day of spring break, I’m at work for an inclement weather make up day and hovering around empty.

Yesterday, my father and I were talking about being mentally taxed.  My husband and I are there.  The other day my husband, our kids, and I were hungry.  I was too tired to cook and decided to get takeout.  Almost at the same time my husband and I said to each other, “We can go where ever you want to go.”  Neither one of us wanted to make the decision.  We didn’t want to use the mental energy.  We sat there on the couch trying to wait each other out, when one of our boys said, “How about Chipotle?  I want a taco.”  That’s where we went.  It’s so sad when you are so drained that you can’t even decide what to eat.

There are numerous reasons I have been drained, but the good thing is some of the drain is temporary.  Everything just collided at once.  I have been interviewing for a new job.  The position I have at the secondary level has been eliminated at all secondary schools.  I have been grading papers from my Crispus Attucks students and research papers from my IUPUI students.  I’ve been trying to figure out what I will grow in my garden and how I will rotate the vegetables I grew last year (if you are a novice gardener, you should rotate your produce – you’re welcome for the free tip).  Then, I want to spend time with my husband, kids, parents, sisters, nieces, and friends in addition to being an active participant in various organizations.  If you are kind enough to read this, you know I devote time to writing too.  But this is life…so much to do and so little time.

I normally use break as a time to catch up on work.  The rest of this week will be devoted to finishing up important tasks, but the second week will be devoted to relaxation.  If you are an educator or are taking off time to spend spring break with your kids, use some of the time to take care of yourself.  Honestly, there will be a long list of work to do whether you work on it over break or not.
